lyrics

(the blue house)

The woman in the blue house buys two coffees every day
One for her and one she carries to the bench beside the pier
And she sits there for an hour and she throws the second away
And she's done it every morning of the seven-and-a-half years

And the boy who works the counter never asks
And makes them both without being told

The woman in the blue house, the woman in the blue house
Everybody in this town knows and nobody has said
The woman in the blue house, the woman in the blue house
And the bench has got a plaque on it and nobody has read

The plaque says only "Michael" and a year and nothing more
Which is either very little or exactly what it's for

I don't know her. I've never spoken to her once.
I've watched her from a window for two summers with my tea
And I have made her whole life up and I'm not sure that's allowed
And it's the truest thing I've written and it isn't hers, it's me

The woman in the blue house, the woman in the blue house
Everybody in this town knows and nobody has said
The woman in the blue house, the woman in the blue house
And the bench has got a plaque on it and nobody has read
