lyrics

(one two three four!)

I have written it eleven times and rehearsed it twice as often
There's a version with the good line about the summer
There's a version where I cry, that one's the honest one
(honest one)
I will deliver neither, obviously, ever

Because you'll be normal (you'll be normal)
And normal beats prepared every single time

The speech! The speech!
Two years of drafts and I'll say "hey, you good?"
The speech! The speech!
Buried with me, fully memorised

Saw you in Ralphs by the cereal in April
You said "oh hey" and I said "oh hey" and that was it
Eleven drafts, two years, one aisle, four syllables
(four syllables)
I went home and added a twelfth draft, which is insane

The real speech is one sentence.
It's "I thought we'd be friends forever and I was wrong about that."
I'll never say it. Obviously. Obviously.
(BAND EXPLODES)

The speech! The speech!
Two years of drafts and I'll say "hey, you good?"
The speech! The speech!
Buried with me, fully memorised

(the speech!)
